SELF PORTRAITS
I started this growing series as a creative balance during the global lockdowns that have influenced our lives over the past years. Searching for a creative outlet in my own four walls, I finally started exploring a form of visuals that I always thought were too weird, random, or niche for any of my photo projects that would involve other people. “Why asking someone to do something so different when I don’t even have references for it in my own portfolio? How would I even explain something, that I can’t fully put into words myself”. Although, if it’s just me, I don’t need to explain, I don’t need to mask or pretend, I don’t need to worry whether the process of creation is seen as professional or not. I don’t need to convince or explain.
Whether you’re a painter, a photographer or a musician, you must know the feeling of hearing the question “Are you any good at it?” When you first tell someone about your hobby or work. A question we barely ask when someone tells us about their not-so-outcome driven hobbies like playing a team sports or reading books. We often forget that arts aren’t just outcome driven, but we start them because they’re “fun”, they give us enjoyment, relaxation or excitement. Sure, we’re proud of some of our results, but it’s the progress and habit that makes them so special to us.
Feel free to interpret any of these images, but honestly, none of these have a deeper meaning. They were just an enjoyment of process that happened to have an outcome to them.
P.s.: Feel free to visit my Alter Ego “Laura in Ropes” if you’re happy to go onto an artistic adventure with her.
